Unit 31 Specialist location Photography: Health and Safety

How to keep safe when on location

When using a tripod

  • Don't set it up in a busy area but in an area where it not so busy and out of the way of others so people don't trip over it.

  • Make sure you don't end up blocking anyones way and disabled access.

  • Make sure it is visible to others so they can walk around you and so it doesn't bother anyone.

  • You need to make sure people can easily walk around it.

  • Don't just randomly set up your tripod and then don't end up using it, make sure you are clear on what and where you are placing the tripod.

When shooting on location

  • Don't shoot in the middle of a busy road!

  • Be respectful of anyone you are taking photos of, incase someone over reacts.

  • Be aware of what is around you

  • Try and not walk into anything!

  • Ask for permission if you want to take photos in a shop and on private land.

  • Be careful of wildlife as some may bite.

  • Make sure you are balanced so you don't fall over.

  • Wear suitable clothing depending on the location.

  • Cross the road at suitable places e.g traffic lights.

  • Make sure when uploading your work that it has copyright, watermark or a smaller file size so no one can claim it as their own.

When shooting with a model

  • Look for slip and trip hazards around the location

  • Look at who comes onto the location, and whether they are at risk

  • Look out for any hazards: within the environmental (floor, steps, slops etc); contamination ( water, food, litter etc); organisation (promote a safety culture etc).

  • Make sure you get full consent of all models.
