Unit 31 Visual Narratives - Yvette

Updated: Apr 25, 2019

Intro to the Unit

For this unit, I will need to create a body of images that end up creating a narrative story, find out how I'm going to lay out a collection of photographs and research on three different artist that have used their work that tells a narrative story to the views. I can choose from an example of two artists that were given out, and one artist of my choosing. However, I don't have to pick two artists if I don't want to just as long as I have pick three photographers who have used there work to betray fictional story with their photography. Within my research, I will need to discuss their work style, comment on PowerPoint.

Olga Torbreltus

Olgo Tobrelutes is a contemporary artist born in 1970 Leningrad Saint Petersburg Russia. She is known for working with the uses of different media such as photography, painting and sculpts to betray her work.

1988 she graduated from an architected college, a year later graduated from a special graduate in Computer Graphic and 3D modelling in Germany.

During, her return back to Leningrad Saint Petersburg in the mid to late 90’s she started to win awards for her beautiful artwork.

Now today she lives and works in Saint Petersburg.

For her work she uses old painting then adds to it a modern-day approach.

Titled : Legioners (I – VI) . Dated to be made in 2012

Form

Six different colour images form together making one big main image. Various photos of a famous male celebrity wearing a Roman gladiator headgear with a statue likeness to them each

Also include an example image from her series where she used 'modern day' icons to replace religious figures...... moodboard. Explaining that she was commenting on the shift from historical figures in religion being those that are revered/celebrated... important to modern times where the onslaught of multi media has brought about modern day icons of celebrity.... they have become important because of the money making machine behind them..... and aspirational images that people aspire to be be... so its driven by us as the audience and the marketing of brands and celebrity...

Process| How I think the image was done?

My opinion on how I think this image processed is that she took could have taken the portraits of each investor perhaps wearing the helmets. Once she was happy with the shoot, she would have done a bit of did some post-production to crop the images into the right size and formate then edited the models to give them a statue bust likeness to them. If she didn't take their photo without them wearing the helmets, she could have added them in during post-production. Once she was happy with the editing and cropping down, she would have put each image next to each other to make one bigger picture, finally printed the outcome on Kodak metallic prints.

The wider context/type of works

Torbreltus known for commenting on society of today with the change of having religious figures to look upon and now today era we have famous people so by putting famous male celebrity on to old Roman Glad statures and now giving a painting like feel and to make a comment saying that we move on from having Gladiators to just having a famous sportsmen Each of the six is different images but are titled Legioners followed by a Roman numeral.

Diane Arbus

Diane Arbus is an American historical photographer (post-war movement) from New York (1923 – 1971). She is well known for hand-held black and white film photography and often explored commute of people, groups that were considered to be marginalised. Marginalised means the less important, misunderstood, not in a society or a group that’s wildly finder.

Arbus was documenting on people who are ‘ Edge of society’ marginalised people or groups of gender, disabilities, midgets, circus freaks, giants and transgender.

Her work reminds me of P.T Barnum, An American showman (1810 – 1891) who known for creating a circus and only hiring people who came across as less important and misunderstood. Just like Arbus, they both wanted to make awareness that they are out there and are essential. However, they did it with a different approach with creating awareness on Marginalised group of people.

Arbus was one of the first to use fill-in flash with daylight.

Form

An image of two unhappy girls with matching mirror image bikinis and the background people blur out looking like they are having fun.

The girl on the right looks like she has a bit of a male likeness to her face maybe transgender.

Am given the impression that they are couple or sisters

By the way, they are standing in the frame.

Process | How I think the image was done?

Because of the era when it was taken it could only be done on a film camera with a black and white film with an iso of perhaps 100 due to the use of available lighting provided by the daylight and a speedlight for the fill-in flash effect to brighten deep shadow area.

It is clear that a short lens to help give the image a short depth of filed would have been used as the background is out of focus.

The main focus point is on the mirror image likeness on the bikinis

A shutter speed of a 1/60th of a second would of most likely of been

Dr Joshua Sarinana

He is a scientist with a big passion for photography also he is a well-educated man. He is born in San Jose, California where he got his doctors degree in neuroscience at the University of California, Los Angeles and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Later he became a research fellow at Harvard medical school this is where he studied the computational processing of spatial navigation. After doing all that studying, he then switched his focus of work to the practice and theoretical study of photography. Now his photography work has been well recognised by the Sony World Photography awards, America Photography and Prix de la photograph Paris.

Sarinana got his work to be published in a vast amount of magazines like TIME magazine, CNN and SHOT magazine to name a few also his photos were featured in an iPhone 6 commercial ad. And on top of that, he is a two-time recipient of the Council for the Arts Grant at MIT.

TITLE: Confessional Mask . DATE: 12/12/17 and on going

Form

A female figure with her head place in her hands. Her hand is placed on her knee holding her head as she seems to be looking down give the impression that she is feeling sorrow the photo appears to be in around framed.

Process | How I think the image was done?

This image gives the impression that is was all done digital and perhaps some post production to get the circle frame or he might of printed the images out then cut the image into then scan the image to have digital copy.

The wider context/type of works

The title of this image is called Confessional Mask it is part of a body image that is currently an ongoing project called Prosopagnosia where he is keeping to the same layout of using a circle frame. Prosopagnosia comes from the Greek word “ face” and “Lack of Knowledge”, and it's also known as face blindness or facial agnosia. Sarinana is still working on this series of work and still is building on the body of images staying in the layout with the uses of a circle frame.

The colour in this images seems flat like an oil painting.

Joshua uses the circular frame to give the impression that he is looking back in time to look back at his memories of people that he had a close relationship with throughout over ten years. He says that the series of images is to question the accuracy of memories and to play on the impact of identity.

Image Narrative idea development Identity

I have choice the theme of identity were I want to collect a body of images showing a subject matter and some type of key element that I identity with them for example someone who smokes I would like the model to be a smoking area and wanting to highlight the area and cigarette being used. I want to use some song lyrics by a few songs like ' who is it - by Michael Jackson' as it has lyrics like " is it my brother", "Who is it", "It is a friend of mine?" and a second song by The Who titled " who are you?" this song also has simler lyrics to the song by Michael Jackson " "who who who who", "who are you?"

Idea of lighting style that I want to incorporate into one of my shots

Another approach that I could take to the theme of identity is creating a body of images which different models and just going off their stance, fashion style and body positions and in post-production I would desire, blur the face of the model as it would delete the mean identity but creates a comment on who are you? Which also works to combined with the lyrics element that I still want to tie in.

Test shoots

My idea was show off what I identify with the subject matter which was her fashion style and the use of make up.

If I get another chance to do this again, I want to have someone with a spray bottle since I believe that the water drops would add a more of a dramatic effect and give the impression that the was makeup power coming off the brush. when I was reviewing the image, I also notice that I should use a backlight or a white background however this is something that I would consider for next time.

Post-Production

I used some old images to try different tools to blur out the faces and see what I think works well. The mean tool that I used was the Blur and Smudge tool and me also on a different image I used the Brush tool and Eyedropper tool to pick up the skin colour tone, used the Brush tool to paint over the face then went back over with the blur tool.

My opinion on this technique is that I enjoyed and can see it working for the theme.

Without paint tool with use of brush tool

For further post production I wouldn't not use the Brush tool as it doesn't seem to work as I believe that it over does it when coming to hiding the face. So I will just going to stick with using the Blur and Smudge Tool

once I have my final photos, I will then do a crop to maybe give a bit of a circle frame to each image

I like how kept the mean key feature of the glasses staying way from being smudged because as the view you can still work out who in the frame

these photos above are old images that I have found to test to different brush techniques

To create the circle effect to get a simller outcome to joshura works I had to double click on image layer to make it a layer then use the ellipticals marquee tool then crop the size that I need and finally I go to select inverse and press detel on the keyboard to get rid of the outer area

Final Outcomes

these are my final outcomes each one with a circle frame and their faces blured out. I like how the theme is clear
