Introduction
The brief overview: - we are looking at what conceptual photography is and how to respond to the theme of invisible lines in conjunction with the World Photography Organisation.
I always aimed to match what the client and the theme that was given by the client. I always aimed to do the best of my ability to always meet the client exceptions.
Proposal
My approach to the given theme will be to take a literal approach, exploring towns and cities with my focus being on architectural line shape form, abstraction, light, shade and geometric shapes. I want to try and explore different ways of blending the world of black and white film photography and digital photography for this unit and which one will have a stronger outcome.
Why I chose this approach towards the theme of invisible lines is because it will be good to link it up with a different unit that I'm also studying as both of these involved some form of travelling to different places and doing a photo observes walk and explore the different environment around me. When I on the photo walks for one of the units I might come across a subject matter that may work well for another unit that am doing and I wouldn't want to miss out if I was just forced on just one doing one but not the other at the same time because that moment might not happen again.
The strengths that I have as a photographer is normally shown by my positive attitude and passion for photography, I have an understanding of EDFAT( Entire, Detail, Frame, Angle and Time) when it comes to doing photoshoots.I have the ability to work well under pressure and good listening skills and enjoy working with photoshop. I have Darkroom and studio knowledge. I know how to use Film and DLSR, many different types of lenses. I know about different lighting skills, how to set up a shoot depending on the location from using speedlight to know what lighting attachment to have in the studio. I have a good knowledge of the main cities and close by towns - the are many different places of interest close to where I live.
What I may find as a weakness during my time on this project would be the cost of transport and it could stop me going further afield to explore different locations. I would like to stop saying but not doing when it comes to ideas and instead, I want to say that I say and really do come of my ideas that I came up with. I would like to work on my knowledge of camera setting so I do it on of memory which would only come with picking up a camera more.
One of my weakness is that I worry too much about whether my work is good enough to be featured in my portfolio and any competitions.
Opportunities that may arise are the uses of the public transport that are available to use so I can get too many different places for me to explore on a photoshoot also the chance to investigate other locations. secondly, I have an opportunity to build and improve upon any weaknesses that I perhaps have, therefore I can use this chance to expand on my portfolio with this unit and alongside working with Sony World Photography Competiton I could end up with having my name out there so I can get noticed just by entering photos for the competition. Furthermore, I got a big range of knowledge and skills that I put in practices such as knowing how to use many different types of lens and lighting styles which will also come handly on building my expression and photographic practice. The will be the opportunity to build my network with other photographers. The weather condition could become an opportunity since it could end up benefiting my outcomes depending on what the conditions were and due to the use of natural lighting conditions as will reflect on the mood of what I wanting to portray within my photography.
What different threats I might come across or even end up exploring as a photographer:
Not able to drive will have an effect on how far am able to travel and explore which means that it will be hard to take equipment on to location without risking any damage to them. Planning will play a part in being a threat if I don't stick to my plans or if something arises which could intervene with the plans that I have made and what to go ahead with, (for example if the subject matter changes or if not even there) Other photographers might be a threat if there are too many shooting the same subject matter.
Rejection from competitions and try to gain experience by working with other photographers. The weather condition could be a threat depending on what I planned to do for a photoshoot such as am heading out to do a photoshoot but suddenly it chances unexpectedly which will have an impact on the lighting and mood of the outcomes. The cost of travel and to repair or replace any damage to equipment can threaten the success of the shoot both the expense and the time taken.
Primary and Artist Research
I did a general search on Google Images by searching up the theme and I came across different types of how lines are can be used in photography but then I came across one image that had two different
I have been looking at different the world of photography to help me generate ideas and looking at the start my ideas to grow and develop into taking photos of buildings.
The images above I enjoy looking at how the photographer managed to capture the lines of the building crossing over each other, the uses of light and shade plus having the images in black and white really helps to build on a great atmosphere it says to me straightway the use of invisible lines because of the use of lines shadows and the lines of the building.
Secondary Research
Photographer 1: Michael Wolfe
A German photographer works and lives in megacities documenting the architecture and culture.
in 1994 he moved to Hong Kong and worked as a contract photographer for Stern magazine and stayed with them for 8 years. Afterwards, he moved on to work for himself and focusing on his own projects where many of them have been published as books.
I have drawn inspection from is project architecture of density where it looks like he shoots the images from a density with the use of a wide-angle lens and during post-production, I get the impression that the would of force in on the architecture and cropped to get that up-close feel to them. from the look of things, he has focused on a tall building like skyscrapers, office blocks and flats.
the tidiness and close up the architecture really shows off to me the theme investable lines as it comes across from the way the building is structured and how I think we can just overlook how close together these things ac a be and the beauty of the colour and how each building looks like they line up parallel to each other I get overwelled by it.
The way Wolf has captured these architectures why am inspired to take the approach that I have came up with for this unit.
Photographer 2: David Creedon
These images are part of a series of work called Ghost of the Faithful Departure. where Creedon builds a body of images going into old warren down houses in Ireland the title gives the impression that these houses were left and abanded when the owner of the homes pass away so they were left unowned by anyone for years. I Alos get the impression that Creedon somehow managed to find put about hem and documenting the rooms. I like how he managed to capture each image and keep them colour coordinated such as for example the first image has a lot of brown tones and other images have might have blue
both photohrapher had colour as
Idea development
The invisible line provokes the idea of using the techniques of leading lines and how to meliorate it into my final outcomes.
the techniques that I used for the called racking the zoom and laying (creating a double exposure) than in the setting of the camera I had it set double exposure which means it will allow for me to take multiple images and it will overlay the first image over the second one.
The green lights in the theme are my pointing the lens towards a fire-escape sign and racking the zoom during the middle of the exposure. this another approach that I want to try out for this unit.
the type of lighting style that I have in mind is strong lighting for light and shade effects on the outcomes of my images.
I mostly end up using natural light when am shotting on location however I could end up using lights that are provided from the which will help to give that feeling movement from the light of street light and passing by transport.
I really want to try and get my final outcomes to be black and white images on the other hand, when am out shooting I want to try out racking the zoom on the lens when am shooting, double exposure or even blend both of them together.
if I was going to do do some light and shade work for my final outcome I will need to have a low exposure composition for better contrast which always for a stronger outcome.
Different angles can change depending on the lens I end up using during the shoot and I can change the high prospective so am not just shooting from eye level.
if I want to I should try out shooting from a different perspective as it will determine what the mood of the photos would be for the final outcome if I was to shoot fro a low angle it could give the viewer different impression depending on what is inside the frame.
during my time on doing a photo walk in an urban area, I will be on the lookout for things around the area that might be able to link in with the given theme. I could try and take a trip to different places local towns and cities because of the different type of achitechor provide within their cityscape.
As for weather conditions am looking ever sunny or cloudy sky as I would like to think that it helps out to determine what the given mood is.
Material & equipment list - Digital camera use - lighting - available light/flash - colour/black & white - abstract - landscape - urban - architectural -
For me what comes to mind is on when am thinking of the theme, I was thinking of the techniques of leading lines, I had other thoughts of showing lines that we don't normally notice, the basic lines that we might not don't notice within the likes of landscapes or even bodyscapes the outline of the human body's.
however, I would prefer to focus on buildings than any other subject matters
I was looking further into my approach towards the theme of invisible lines of doing it and I came across a series of work called Beyond the Looking glass. an abstracted style with what I believe to be a fast shutter speed looking at these images below it reminded me of time where I tried out the technique of racking the zoom.
Moodboard
After a brainstorm on reflecting back at some of my old photography, it got me thinking off revering the fine art approach and style and improving on it and find a way of making it fit in with the theme of invisible lines
Photoshoot 1 - Racking the Zoom and double exposure in camera
For this shoot, I went around my local town when it was sunny and I was lucky enough to use the Christmas lights to my advantage in my photography.
I aimed to try and express in the image was something that I did in the past which I enjoy doing now but I wanted to improve on it. This is normally shown by the tones and the overlay with images, by doing this I can reflect on what I did in the past and how I did better.
thought out the shoot I was just most experimenting on the techniques of racking the zoom and double exposure as I know from last time they are all will be unique and can't be recreated due to the use of the techniques that I was revisiting and the subject matter. I tried experimenting with shaking the camera as well as overlaying shots of two different buildings (double exposure) as well as doing this with the light source from the Christmas lights.
Racking the zoom is done by zooming in and out whilst taking the shots, this causes an effect that gives the photograph the feeling of movement. By blurring the lines on the images in this way I feel it shows invisible lines of movement. Which is how I interpreted the theme of invisible lines.
Second shoot I wanted to of hind lines with in achitcher
3rd shoot - Birmingham
when to the city to carry out
Post-production
during the post-production, I crop in the image get them a uniform crop of 16:9 and a small rotate the rotation was done just to help part of the image line up better within the framing and crop ratio
I see this being views in many different sets of ... such as the example below
For example, these pictures can be displayed in a set of 4 on a wall printed a large scale either 1x 4 line with each other or 2x2 picture both side by side
what I like about these images is that you get the sents of movement
Presentation
final images and reflection on those outcomes - plus compare and contrast to the work of others that inspired you
Evaluation
When I do my projects I get inspired by Through the looking glass project because of the uniqueness I love how it gives the impression movement and how when you capture movement normal you get lines that show blur exposure fast movement
though out this project It really show how my idea development had chanced from taking photographs of building all the way through me getting inspired by other people projects but still managing for it to link back to photographing building.
